Notes from a Lisbon studio on slow Fridays

No client calls, no deadlines, one long lunch. What happens when a design studio protects one day a week for play.

Tomás Reis

Design Director

Since 2019, Fridays at Cozova have had no client meetings. The morning is for sketching, reading and side projects; the afternoon starts with a long lunch at the tasca on the corner.

Why it works

Most of our best ideas didn’t arrive on a Tuesday under pressure. They showed up on a Friday, when someone was playing with a typeface for no reason. Slow time is not wasted time — it is where taste is trained.

  • Friday sketch hour, every week

  • A monthly type specimen swap

  • One studio walk to a museum each quarter

Clients rarely notice, except that the work on Monday tends to be better.

Tomás looks after type, color and the studio’s ever-growing specimen library. He has opinions about kerning and very few about coffee.
